Crafty Halloween!

Another idea to celebrate Halloween in class could be to doing new Halloween themed crafts. As well as doing recipes in class, crafts are a good way to use the English language in a context and for a purpose. This will help students to realize that the language they are learning is important to understand other people.

When doing crafts in class, I always like to use materials that can be easily recycled and reused. For this reason, I have classified these crafts depending on what kind of material you will need to use to create them. Let's get started!

1. Using Paper Plates.

In almost every house, we can find leftover paper plates from birthdays or parties. Paper plates can be a good material to do easy crafts such as the following:

SCARY GHOSTS
We can make scary ghosts to decorate our classrooms just by drawing a scary face and adding some extra details with paper like hands.

SPOOKY BAGS

If we stick two paper plates together and we cut  the top we have an original bag to hold candies or treats. Adding details with colored paper we can create different creatures like cats, spiders, pumpkins, etc.

WITCH HATS
By just sticking a paper cone on the plate we can make witches' hats. We can use them to decorate our classroom or even to dress us up as part of a costume. It's a good idea to create our own costumes or props to use when acting out role plays about Halloween.

2. Using Toilet Paper Rolls.

We usually throw away thousands of toilet paper rolls, but they can be an excellent material to create lots of different crafts such as the following:

A TOILET PAPER BAT
Painting the paper tube with black and adding some wings we creates a bat. This bat can be used to hold candies or other treats.

BAT MINI BOXES

We can create mini boxes by folding the paper tubes both, at the top and at the bottom. Then, we just have to decorate them as you like to make bats, cats, spiders, pumpkins... Theses mini boxes can also be used as well to keep candies, treats or other stuff inside.

MONSTER MOBILE
This mobile is a good way to decorate our classrooms or for students' bedroom. We just need to paint some toilet paper tubes with different colours and decorate them with eyes, a scary mouth, teeth, etc. Finally, we hang them at different levels together with a piece of string.

3. Using Balloons.

If we don't have balloons at home we can buy them because they are very cheap. I like to use balloons in class because most of our students, even the oldest, don't know how to tie a knot. And this is a good way to learn how to do it or keep on practicing.

VAMPIRE BALLOON BAT
Attaching two balloons with sticky tape we get the body of a bat. Then, we just have to cut construction paper to add the wings, the eyes, the fangs and all the details we want.

MONSTERS LOOKING AT ME!
We can decorate our classrooms with a wall full of monsters that keep their spooky eyes on us. This is an excellent activity for the youngsters because they only need to draw or cut out scary eyes and mouths.

4. Using Wine or Champagne Corks.

We usually throw away wine or champagne corks, but they can be good materials to create our crafts. Perhaps, you think they are very small, but they are a good way to paint details and to develop fine  motor skills.

CUTE MONSTERS
We can create very scary and at the same time funny characters painting wine or champagne corks with gouache paints. We can let our students decorate them adding the materials that they prefer.

5. Using Eggs Cartons.

Egg cartoons are another great material for our crafts that we usually throw away. With them we can create cheap, but nice crafts.

Cutting, painting and decorating the cartoon eggs, we get some cute mini boxes to keep some treats in or whatever the students want.

6. Using Glass Jars.

Although we don't normally use glass jars in class, because they can get broken easily, they are a good material when used with care, especially for the older students.

SWEET MUMMIES
These mummies jars are easy to make. Just wrap the jar with bandages and glue on two eyes that can be made with white or black paper. We can use these jars to hold candies, pencils...

GLASS JAR LIGHTS

If we paint jars like pumpkins, Frankenstein, mummies or ghosts and then, we put a small candle in it we have scary jar lights to decorate student's houses on Halloween night!

Do you usually do crafts in your English lessons?
Which kind of materials do you use? Do you buy them or do you recycle materials?
